Cotswold College of Arms Quincentenary First Day Cover
Price per Unit (piece):
Issue date: 17th January 1984
The College of Arms celebrated its quincentenary in 1984. To mark the occasion, Royal Mail released for impressive stamps of different arms.
The College of Arms has the most comprehensive set of heraldic records in the world. It can prove descent for English people and those of English ancestry, so long as the family is on its records, and its Officers-of-Arms take pride in their 500-year-old living link with the past.
Today, those who can prove they live 'with dignity' can apply to the College of Arms for the right to bear arms, or they can institute a search to see whether their ancestors bore arms.
Many families may have lost their lands and fortunes, but take great pride in maintaining their coats of arms.
The stamps are:
16p: Arms of The College of Arms
20 1/2p: Arms of Richard III Founder
28p: Arms of The Earl Marshal
31p: Arms of The City of London
